Daal can be cooked without meat. Some people cook daal chawal (lentils & rice) to get a break from the chicken. There are different ways to cook daal. Some people like to cook it in boiled style and some like it in bhono style. Its up to you whatever way you want to cook it. I am cooking it in bhoono style today where you make the masala first and the add the daal. I will post the boiled style recipe later.
Prepare the Masala:
Add oil in a pan and add cumin seeds in it, once they start cracking up add finely sliced onion and let it get mild golden. Now there is a difference between golden and golden brown. Golden is the color that onion take before getting golden brown. Now add chicken into the pan and also add ginger garlic paste and let the chicken cook in it to loose its (uncooked) smell. Now add the tomatoes along with other masalas (salt, haldi, red chillies, garam masala). Let it cook till the chicken is half done.

Daal:
Remove the chicken pieces from the pan and let the masala stay in the pan. Rinse the daal in water and let it soak for about 20 to 30 minutes. Now add this daal into the masala and add two to three green chillies.Bhono the daal in the masala for about 3 to 4 minutes and then add water into the daal and let it cook. Once the daal is done, add the cooked chicken pieces into it and let it cook along with the daal. Once the daal and chicken both are completely done, remove from the flame.
Tadka:
Now in a frying pan, add oil and then add finely round slices of garlic. Once the garlic start taking golden color remove from the flame and add oil and garlic into daal and cover immediately, so the steam stays inside and the daal gets the desired smell.
You can serve it with white boiled rice.
